Yes, SMTP would be good
Actually I'm using SMTP in my system, however for user who does not have technical knowledge declaring SMPT parameters would confuse them a bit, so we would keep the original php mail functions as an option also. Build-in php mail function is good for someone using a professional mail server also.

@joe if the idea is not bad I would suggest changes in the core for this purpose

FrontHrm in the official repo is an old version which is not compatible with SQL Strict Mode in FA2.4.6
Please use the lastest source code HERE to avoid the issues and includes new features as well

I have faced similar issues for new files, folders created on a manually configured Linux VPS

Yes @joe, it all are definitely good.
And if Jquery could be included in the 2.5 I would take a plan for a javasript chart library also.
Can't wait to see breakthroughs in the next major release.
