At least in current (2.3.19) version you can edit sales invoices regardless it is paid or not, unless it was already voided.

If there is no edit for the Invoice, then it has been allocated and you will have to send a credit note and a new invoice.

is it possible to edit invoice after it is issued?
like having a field remarks in invoice so that after it is issue it is still editable?
